The project involves the design and build of 8,000m2 of classrooms, training workshops, office space and a refectory on a site in central Leeds previously occupied by Yorkshire Chemical Works.
The steel-framed scheme comprises three building elements:
(i) A three-storey workshop space features a traditional north-lit roof profile to echo the area’s industrial heritage; Kalwall translucent external cladding offers high-level airtightness; solar panels are included on the south-facing roof slopes; (ii) A two-storey block facing onto the car park will be used for short course teaching and auxiliary offices. The block is attached to the workshop and classroom/support element by a glazed- roof corridor and clad with coloured metal rainscreen and glazing;
(iii) The three-storey classroom, refectory and support services element will be formed in red brick to complement the historic Alf Cooke Printworks and Medisil buildings opposite the site. The refectory is positioned on the ground floor to give active frontages to the south- western corner of the building and the landscaped front entrance area.
The scheme has been designed to deliver carbon emissions savings of at least 25 per cent and is targeting BREEAM ‘Excellent’.
